A solar panel system installed in 2015 should still be generating at 80-85% of its original output today. Signs your system needs attention

Solar systems are low maintenance, but a few clear signs are worth acting on. If you notice any of the below, it is worth booking a check before a small issue becomes an expensive one.

Output significantly below previous years

If generation is 20% or more below the same period last year, it often points to soiling, shading, or a failing panel or optimiser. Worth checking soon, as you are losing savings every day.

Inverter showing a fault code

A fault code or warning light usually means the inverter has tripped or detected a problem. Some clear on their own, but a recurring code needs diagnosis before it stops generation entirely.

Rattling or noise from the roof

Rattling or knocking can mean a loose mounting clamp or a panel that has shifted. This is a safety issue and should be inspected promptly before wind makes it worse.

Visible panel damage from the ground

Cracked, cloudy, or discoloured panels seen from the ground are likely letting in moisture or failing internally. The affected panel usually needs replacing to protect the rest of the string.

Bird activity under or around panels

Birds nesting under panels foul the roof, chew cabling, and reduce airflow. Bird proofing solves it and prevents longer-term damage to wiring and the roof itself.

A monitoring app that has gone silent for more than a day can mean a lost connection or, less often, that the system has stopped generating. Quick to check and worth ruling out.
